THE POETIC VALUE OF LIGHT AND SHADE

THE POETIC VALUE OF LIGHT AND SHADE

Apollinaire said that shadow is the handwriting of light.

The sun describes, narrates, dazzles, constructs contours  and defines colours.  And it draws shadows.
There is no light without shadow, no beauty without a chiaroscuro.
The soft light of candles and lamps creates atmosphere, makes food more inviting and appetizing, softens faces, enhances expressions.
Daylight, with the passing of the hours, with the changing of the seasons and the sky, naturally creates an unceasing and fascinating interplay of light and dark, of tonal variations and changes of perspective.

And in the home too, it is fascinating to experiment with the illumination, rearranging your décor with a kaleidoscope of lighting possibilities, to create lights and shadows capable of highlighting the reflections in the mirrors, the gleam of the furniture, the softness and pleats of the silks and the delicacy and texture of all the materials.

Nine-armed candlesticks, with their sinuous curls intertwined in opaque light-gold, welcome the candles' warm light, illuminating corners of welcoming harmony, just as the ecru silk  on the sandblasted lacquered wooden base meets the bergère where you can read and unwind in a moment of enchanted relaxation.
